Answer
Hi Jessica,
I doubt it is the transmission control module (tcm) that is the problem but rather some aspect of the operation of the transmission proper. What you describe is called 'limp-in' mode which when it happens cuts out the transmission shifting operation except for 2nd gear and reverse which use the least amount of parts. It does this when it senses a fault which if unattended will lead to unnecessary damage.
With a '93 the only way to get a quick diagnosis of what the module believes is the problem is to plug a OBD-I code reader into a socket that is under the dash by the steering column which is blue in color and has 6 pins in a rectangular array. This is called the data link connector. The shop will have to have a reader that is for OBD-I and the appropriate matcing plug. The code will be a 2-digit number. A good independent shop will have such a reader, but be sure that they ask it for the transmission codes, not the engine codes, which are also 2-digit and with overlapping numbers which could be confused.
Ask for numbers, what they mean, what they need to do to diagnose further or repair and for how much. Then if you would like my opinion let me know the info and we can compare notes.
About the only simple thing to do before that would be to check the level of transmission fluid as shown on its separate dipstick that stick up out of the transmission. If it appears to need fluid, only buy and add ATF +4 type as anyother will cause damage, and don't overfill it. Just add small amounts to the dipstick tube until the level reaches the minimum required.

PS It is probably a 3.5L engine. For clarity, tell me whether this ons is the last year of the older model body style or the new body that came out also this '93 model year and continued through 2004.
