Chrysler Repair: 99 Intrepid: check engine/cruise lights on, 4 digit numbers, independent shop

sometimes while driving my cruise control light will come on by it self and at that point i have no control over the speed until the light goes out and sometimes it shuts down like this.

p.s check engine light is on

Hi Brian,
The fastest way to get a handle on this is to get a fault code readout that will tell why the check engine light it 'on'. That may explain the cruise control light also, but until we resolve what is the fault that the controllers have detected by getting the code(s) there is no simple way to deal with it. You can get a free readout at an Autozone parts store or for less than $40 at an independent shop. Let me know the 4-digit numbers if any. You might try the ignition key to get the codes:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see it the mileage reading changes to instead show a 4-digit number preceded by a P. I will wait to learn what you find one way or the other.
