Chrysler Repair: 2.5L V-6 timing belt inspection/replacement, timing belt replacement, interference engine

Question
Hello
Last week I bought a convertible 98 sebring JXI with 6 cyl 2.5 engine, it has 80 k milage and Iwas thinking to be on safe side and change the timing belt, as I went thru manual I noticed the manual talks about only 2.4 engine timing belt replacement at 105000 and does not say any thing about 2.5 engines, the question for me is does my car now or at what milage needs a timing belt change? is the 2.5 an interference engine?
THANKS FOR THE HELP

Answer
Hi Ruben,
The engine does have the issue of valve/piston interference if the timing belt breaks. The manual recommends change at 105,000 miles. I would suggest however that you inspect the belt by removing the three fasteners on the timing belt cover of the bank closer the front of the vehicle and move it enough to visually inspect the belt's condition. Let that be the basis for your decision as to whether to do it now, or in the future.
