Chrysler Repair: PCM for Chrysler Concorde: Is used OK?, chrysler concorde, wrecked vehicle

Question
QUESTION: I have a used 99 Concorde and the brain on the car died. I was told that I have to buy a new one because they are programmed by the VIN number. Is that true or can I buy a used one?

ANSWER: Hi Aliya,
No, you can buy a used one and simply have it programmed with the proper VIN at a garage that has the readout box and knowledge of how to do that. It is mainly an issue as regards the vehicle theft security system, if you have one. If the car won't start (or rather starts and dies after a couple of seconds, which is a sign that the theft system isn't disarmed) then you need to get it programmed. Even a new one would have to be programmed. So just be sure that the used one is for your model year and size of engine. Ideally it would have the same part number as your old one. Also, be sure that the code put out by the old one has no other explanation except that it has to be replaced.

QUESTION: thank you so much for your answer! One more thing where can I buy the PCM (brain)?

Answer
Any wrecking yard would be the place to look. If you can find a pull it yourself type that would be cheaper, but again be sure about the year and engine. I think any LHS, 300M or Concorde would be OK, but year and engine should match. Regular wrecking yards also have nationwide hotlines to other yards so they might find one if you can't find a wrecked vehicle. Also, check out eBay.
