Chrysler Repair: 96Concorde steering rack installation, chrysler concorde, roll pin

Question
The steering rack on a 96 Chrysler Concorde broke.  I am installing a new one and having a problem getting the steering wheel to lock with it upright.

The steering rack installed with the steering rack all the way left and the steering wheel will lock upside down when the key is in the lock position.

Tried rotating steering wheel to level then reconnecting to steering rack.  When rotating steering wheel to lock it it still locks with the steering wheel upside down.

How can we move the rack or steering wheel to lock the wheel in the normal upright postilion.

Answer
Hi Bill,
I hate to tell you but it all has to do about the point where you removed the old gear and then installed the new one. Here is how it is done from the start, so you can see how to adapt to your situation:
Turn the wheel full left, then rotate back until the roll pin of the coupler is accessible for removal. Then put the ignition switch in the lock position to prevent rotation. Then paint a mark on the shaft and coupler so as to line them up later (in your case you would probably want to displace the marks 180 across the the seam between the two parts rather lined up.  Then continue the steps to removal. Then when reinstalling: turn the gear to full left position, then install it, then align paint marks (which would result in a 180 of the steering wheel in your case). Then align gear with holes in crossmember, then install bolts. Torque the bolts. Then install roll pin and complete assembly. I hope I have interpreted the manual properly for you. I can copy the 7 pages from my '94 manual of the complete process and mail to you by USPS. If you would send me back 3 42-cent stamps, that would be appreciated.

It may be possible to remove the roll pin and by removing the bolts allow the slack to rotate the wheel 180. But you want to be careful not to result in over rotating the wheel and thus breaking the clockspring, so choose which way to rotate it carefully.

PS Thanks so much for the stamps...I will use them to send a couple of pages to others in need, at no cost.
