Chrysler Repair: 02 chrysler 2.7L: timing the chains, postal mail, links on the chain

Question
QUESTION: I replaced the water and oil pump.  With the primary timing chain off, both the crank and cam shafts were rotated in and attempt to set the timing.  The book says not to do this.  How do I return them to the correct position.  The book says to align the timing mark on the secondary timing chain with the colored links on the chain.  On the left (or front) secondary cam sprocket I have both a DOT and an Arrow.  Which one do I use?  If I use the DOT what is the Arrow for?  Also when I get the right (rear) secondary cam sprocket to TDC, it says to insert a rachet into the hub and rotate counter clockwise until bolts line up.  If I do that I will have to rotate the cam almost 350 degrees, but if I went clockwise I would only have to go 10 degrees.  Any words of wisdom would be helpful.

ANSWER: Hi Chris,
I have the '03 Sebring FSM and it has a section for the 2.7L. What manual are you working with, and if it is not an FSM perhaps would you be better served if you had some selected pages on the timing issues from that? I can xerox copy and postal mail those to you if you think that would be helpful.
On the secondary timing sprockets I would use the dots. The diamonds seem to be for the primary chain and its sprockets. The arrow may in fact line up with arrow on the primary sprocket when you install it on the shaft. I would not go the 350 unless you were certain that the pistons were all clear of the valves. I guess my approach would be to determine where things stood at the moment, figure out how far off the two camshafts were from each other and how far each is from the crank, then move all three very slowly in steps in a proportion of 2 to 1 angular rotation of the crank relative to cam primaries and try to 'feel' for any interferences as you went about it. So let me know a postal mailing address if you want the pages. It costs me 10 cents a side plus the postage, which you can re-imburse me for with postal stamps after you receive the pages. I can get it in the mail tomorrow. It is too much detail to try to give you any help by key-stroking.

QUESTION: I'm using a Haynes manual.  So any other info from other manuals would be helpful. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Chris,
I will send 10 pages from the FSM. If you will be so kind as to send me back four 42-cent stamps after you get the pages that would cover my costs. Use my return address as shown on the evelope.

PS If the crankshaft is by chance located such that its timing marks are lined up, then it appears that at that position it is acceptable to move the camshafts as this appears to be a non-interference position. Otherwise await the pages for instruction. It might be best to wait for the pages as I may be mis-reading the situation befor you do any further moving.
