Chrysler Repair: Neon 2000 starter relay clicking, solenoid switch, starter solenoid

Question
hi the neon wont start.. the starter relay clicks when i turn the ignition but nothing happens.. i checked the starter fuse..everything is fine... not sure where to go from there...

Answer
Hi KC,
You would want to distinguish between the starter relay (a small square box in the power distribution center under the hood and which makes a very quiet click that you would not likely hear in the cabin) from starter solenoid switch at the starter motor proper which does make an audible click. If that is what you are hearing than the possibilities are that the battery is too low in charge/voltage level to turn the starter motor or the starter motor itself has worn brushes which are not conducting sufficient current to turn the motor. If we assume you hear the solenoid, then either you have to charge the battery/jump another battery to your battery and see if the motor will then respond OR try tapping on the side of the starter motor while a helper tries the key in an attempt to jiggle the brushes inside the motor to momentarily conduct better. You could try both.
Let me know if the click you hear is only the relay in which case it might be an issue with the wire from the relay to the solenoid.
Usually when the battery is low, the starter solenoid when click repeatedly, though it is also possible for it to just do a single click when the battery is very low. So I leave you to try those approaches, and good luck.
