Chrysler Repair: 98 t&c van: radiator fans dont work, coolant temp, radiator fans

Question
after shutting the vehicle off,the radiator kept runing and it
killed the battery. I recharged the battery anbd the radiator cooling would not come back on.I changed the relay and that didn,t
correct the problem. Also checked the fans with a jump wire and
they are okay. PLEASE HELP,MY VAN IS OVERHEATING AND I NEED IT,and
cannot afford garage repairs. THANK YOU

Answer
Hi John,
It is a very simple circuit. The first possibility is that the fuse for the fans is blown. It is #24 in the power distribution box under hood (40 amp, look closely to be sure it isn't cracked or test it electrically). The other possibility is the ground wire from the relay is not making good contact with the frame. Follow the black wire from the relay plug to a bolt nearby on the frame rail. If you have 12v on the gray wire at the relay plug (coming from the fuse) and a good ground, then the only other possibilities are that the relay control wire from the powertrain controller (light green/dark blue) is defective or the new relay is faulty. The control wire connects to pin 73 of the pcm so you could check that for continuity. Or the dark green wire from the relay to the fans is 'open'. The only other possibility is the coolant temp sensor is not accurate or there is an air bubble in the cooling system where the sensor is located so that it really isn't sensing how hot things are. It is located near the thermostat housing where the top radiator hose attaches to the engine. It should read between 700 and 1000 ohms when the engine is hot. If everything above checks out, then you could suspect the pcm section that controls the relay has gone bad. Please let me know how you solve this one.
