Chrysler Repair: Automatic transmission jerks when coming to a stop, automatic transmision, torque converter

Question
The automatic transmision there is a problem when I start to slow the van down and come to a stop it gets jerky and then jerks real hard into first gear and it has got stuck into second gear every once in a while. I can turn the van off let it sit for a while and then the trans.  runs OK it gets jerky every once in a while what could be the problem

Answer
Hi Sergio,
That jerky response is related to the torque converter which is what allows you to drive without the use of a clutch because it allows the transmission and engine to 'slip' when you aren't moving. However, when your speed gets above about 40 mph there is a 'lock-up' of the torque converter so that the slipping will not occur which gives you better gas mileage, cooler operation, and better braking when on the highway. The problem occurs when the lock-up doesn't release when you slow down below 40 mph and the jerk happens when it finally lets go.
There is a valve inside the part of the transmission called the valve body (the torque converter lock-up piston) which may be sticking in the 'on' position rather than releasing. That would be repaired by opening the transmission drain pan and removing the valve body to service that piston. It is not guaranteed to be the 'fix' but it would be worth trying because the alternative possible fix it to remove the transmission and replace either the lock-up clutch or even the entire torque converter.
So this would be my advice: go to an independent transmission shop (not franchised) and ask them about what they would believe would be the best way to go, beginning with servicing the valve body to correct the piston that controls the torque converter lock-up function? If not that, then what is the cost of trying the torque converter lock-up clutch itself or the entire converter. Those latter possibilities will be much more costly.
As a short-cut around the problem, you might see if putting the transmission in neutral when slowing down will solve the jerk, but then you have to remember to put it back in gear each time. That may or may not work, but give it a try. The cost of the repair may be greater than you want to spend on the vehicle.
Please let me know what you find.
