Chrysler Repair: 98 Plymouth Voyager Timing reset, timing belt tensioner, plymouth voyager

Question
I've had the misfortune of having to help replace the water pump on a 98 Plymouth Voyager 3.0 V6, however when the pump was removed the timing gear was not set at TDC and the tensioner was removed and the belt jumping time...How do I reset the the back to TDC and align the cams??? I can see the timing marks on the cams and I think we can turn the crank to TDC by lining up the rotor on the #1 firing plug...Please help...

Answer
Hi Mike,
You may have to go through all or part of the timing belt install procedure.  check:http://www.allpar.com/eek/timingbelt.html  for some tips. Because the belt is already on you may not have to go thru all the steps, so adapt as needed:
The timing marks for the sprockets are the triangles on the sprockets and the slots on the edges of the inner timing belt cover. The dot timing mark on the crank sprocket tooth and the mark on the oil pump (around 1 0'clock) should be lined up.
Here are the steps as listed in the manual:
Install timing belt tensioner and tensioner spring.  Hook upper end of spring to water pump pin and lower end to tensioner braket with hook facing out. Turn timing belt tensioner counter-clockwise full travel in adjustment slot and tighten bolt to hold tensioner in this position.
The timing belt is installed going counterclockwise, starting at the cranksprocket as follows:
Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket and while keeping tension on the  "tension side" (the front side, the run up to (toward) the right upper sprocket), install the belt on the front (radiator side) cam shaft sprocket.
Then install on the water pump pulley and the rear camshaft sprocket and finally the timing belt tensioner.
Apply rotating force to the front cam shaft sproket in opposite to usual rotating direction (counter-clockwise) direction, to tension the belt tension side, check that all timing marks are lined up.
Install crankshaft sprocket flange (this flange may not have to come off in the first place because the belt is already on the sprocket)
Loosen tensioner bolt and allow spring to tension timing belt
Turn the crankshaft 2 full turns in the clockwise direction, smoothly and only clockwise.
Again check line up the timing marks and if OK tighten the timing belt tensioner locking bolt to 250 inch-pounds.

I hope these details help.
