Chrysler Repair: Transmission/ tachometer, trip meter, button press

Question
MY 1999 cirrus has a tachometer that shows 5-7000 rpm at idle, would that prevent the transmission from engaging? Does the tranny believe the engine is reving at 7000 rpm? The car will not move in R or D. I do feel a slight nudge when I shift into Reverse, but no movement. Tranny fluid is clean and red ??? Scrap it? or cut the tach wire? Thanks for your opinion in advance

Answer
What is the actual rpm at idle? I doubt that there is an interlock related to that mis-reading of the rpm, but maybe. More likely I would think would be the tachometer itself. Try to do a self check of the cluster by holding down the trip/reset button of the odometer and while doing so turn the key from off to run, and if that doesn't start a set of test, do the button press but instead go from off to run to start position of the ignition switch*. Let me know what happens. There is a test of the gauges, warning lamps, odometer trip meter, and transmission range selector.
*If neither of those works, try holding the button down and turn from off to run, keep holding until a word like code or check shows up in the odometer window, then release the button and watch to see what happens.
