Chrysler Repair: Horn: 04 Sebring, chrysler sebring touring, 2004 chrysler sebring

Question
I have a 2004 Chrysler Sebring Touring, has 42,000 miles. The horn barely makes a sound when you blow it. I would just like to know what is causing it, & if it is expensive to fix.

Answer
Hi Julia:
It could be the horn itself, the contacts inside the horn relay, or simply the wire from the horn relay to the horn or from the horn to the chassis (called 'ground') is loose/corroded and therefor not conducting electricity well. The horn is under the front bumper on the right side. The wire from the horn to ground attaches to the body on the flat surface just behind the right head lamp, so open the hood and look for a group of wires that come to a screw which holds a common 'eyelet' to the horizontal surface just behind the headlamp. Remove the screw and check that the eyelet and the metal surface are shiny, and then screw it back together. Then try the horn to see if it is louder. If not then go to the fuse box under the dash where all the fuses and several relays are located. There are two relays side by side, and if those show them to have the same part number, pull them out and interchange them and see if that solves the problem. If that doesn't do it, then it has to be the horn itself or some problem in one of the electrical connector interfaces of the the horn circuit.
You may thus be able to fix this yourself at no cost. The horn too is probably easy to remove and replace if that is the issue, just look for it under the bumper while a helper toots it to help you locate it.

PS I decided to not make this a private question so that others might be able to learn how to deal with a similar problem.
