Answer
Hi Dave,
It is good you mentioned the auto headlamp system. That system also controls the lighting of the instrument cluster/climate control/overhead console. The automatic temperature control system has an in-car temp sensor and sun sensor on the dash and the signal from it to body computer under the dash is used to control the headlamps automatically. The body computer is supposed to average light signals to take into account short term variation in the sunlight striking the sensor from passing objects and shadows. I suspect that you either observe normal variation in the system for which it is not prepared to interpret or that the averaging function is impaired. The problem going away as the engine warms may rather reflect increasing darkness and the consequent light level stabilization. The door open aspect may also be programmed into the headlamp switch delay function related turning off the lights, etc.
With that understanding of the system you must decide whether to pursue repair or not. I can't tell you if there is for sure something wrong with the auto headlamp circuitry. You may opt to live with its 'gremlins'.
