Chrysler Repair: Clunk when shifing/accelerating: transmission?, cracked rubber, cv joint

Question
My 2004 Pacifica has 91,000 miles on it. Just last year had a huge maintnence job, transmission, brakes, the works. About a month ago, it started making a loud clunking noise when the engine shifts, while acclerating, no matter what speed. It also seems to hesitate when I press the gas and then the noise comes. I get the oil changed regularly and use synthetic.

Answer
Hi Kelly,
It very well could be a motor/transmission mount (this device is what attaches the powertrain to the chassis and which has a rubber interconnection bushing that can wear out). That would be the first possibility. You may notice it visually if you open the hood, put on the parking brake. Then while the engine is idling have a helper put his foot on the brake and then shift from park to reverse and/or neutral to drive while you watch/listen to see if the engine shifts its position relative to the body panels noticeably, maybe even making a clunking noise. If so, then one of the 3 mounts is fatigued and needs to be replaced.
If the sound instead is a 'clicking' sound and that changes depending upon whether you are turning or going straight, that would be the sound of a cv-joint on one of the front axles that has a cracked rubber boot and so has lost its grease.
So check that out and let me know what you find.
