Chrysler Repair: 1990 Chrysler 5th ave 3.3 liter: sbec removal, fuel system service, warranty issues

Question
if i replace the sbec computer with used one from a wrecking yard do i have to reprogram it if so how. what if they removed it while the alarm was set will it be in a hard lock down if so how do i reset it. thankyou very much.

Answer
Hi Ron,
The theft module is separate from the SBEC and care must be taken to not remove it unless the engine is running, so that may be an issue if you separate the SBEC from a car with such a theft module in it.  Ideally you would want to have the engine running and then disconnect the plug on the theft module, and finally shut off the engine and finally remove the SBEC from the car. Otherwise you may have to get it to a dealer to reprogram the SBEC from what may be a 'hard shut down' situation.
Similarly, I would try to have the recipient car running, disconnect the theft module, and then turn off the engine and change the SBEC. You might check with a dealer to see if the SBEC part no.'s were different, depending on the absence or presence of the theft module in the vehicle.
According to the part 14 fuel system service section of the '90 manual there is no other issue with changing out the SBEC. Later years did require specific programming of serial numbers and mileage readings pursuant to warranty issues.
So aside from possible interference via the theft module, which if handled as described, I see no other issue.
