Chrysler Repair: 98-00 Grand Voyager 3.3/3.8L Alternator replacement, plymouth grand voyager, intake plenum

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE with a 3.3L engine.  I had it off of the road for 2 years, and just recently got it back on.  As expected, the battery was dead, but I gave it a full charge and it worked fine.  A couple of days later the battery was dead.  I assumed that I needed a new battery, so I bought one.  Was fine for two days, but the other night while driving, the battery light came on, and the lights and radio started to flicker.  It wouldn't start after that without another charge. So now I assume that I need a new alternator.  Can you please provide step by step instructions for replacing the alternator?  Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Rob,
I have the '98 and '02 shop manuals but not the '00, and they differ. So can you tell me does the alternator mount near the firewall side of the engine, or near the radiator side of the engine?

QUESTION: Roland,
It mounts near the firewall side.  Also, from the description of the problem, would you agree that the alternator is the problem?  Any chance it could be the voltage regulator?  Thanks.q

Answer
Hi Rob,
I dount it is the regulator which really is not a separate part but is built-in to the pcm. The field coil wire that does the regulation is dark green at the alternator and connects to pin 4 at the pcm if you want to verify the patency of the connection. The manual calls the alternator the 'generator'.
Here is the procedure which applies to the years '98-'00 as far as I can tell.
Disconnect battery negative cable
Remove windshield wiper housing (it is not clear to me if this is the wiper motor housing or just part of the mechanism; let me know and I can tell you about removing the motor if necessary)
Remove accessory drive belts
Remove bolt holding top of generator mount bracket to engine air intake plenum
Remove bolts holding outside of generator mount bracket to generator mount plate
Remove bolt holding top of generator to mount bracket
Remove generator mount bracket from engine
Rotate generator toward rear dash panel
Disconnect the push-in field wire connector from back of generator
Remove nut holding b+ wire to generator
Separate b+ terminal from generator
Remove bolt holding bottom of generator to lower pivot bracket
Remove generator from vehicle

Install is the reverse.
