Chrysler Repair: 2004 Neon Cruise Control, vacuum hoses, brake light switch

Question
The cruise control on my Neon when you hit the button to set
the cruise it may work for a few seconds and then shuts right off. I have changed the brake light switch. I guess there are no modules for the cruise on this year (2004)Neon.
The cruise used to work fine. What could it be the computer maybe?

Answer
Hi Craig,
I am unaware of any major change in the speed control system that would have eliminated the speed control servo module, it that is what you mean by 'no modules'. My suspicion would be a flaky connection through the clockspring which connects the steering wheel to the steering column harness. But it could be a number of other possibilities:
first check for trouble codes (free at an Autozone parts store)
be sure the brake light switch is adjusted to not be activated by bumps in the road
loose/corroded connections at the servo
a leaky vacuum reservoir
loose of leaky vacuum hoses
defective one-way vacuum check valve
secure connections at both ends of the servo cable
smooth operation of the throttle linkage
electrical glitches in the PCM wiring/circuits
defective servo
I would start with the electical type of issues using a volt-ohm meter to verify the continuity of the wires. The black wires from the speed control switches at the steering wheel should be connected to ground (try moving the wheel when testing). The red/light green wires go to pin 41 of the powertrain control (similarly move the steering wheel).
