Chrysler Repair: 1996 Chrysler mini-van radio intrermittent, soldering pencil, electrolytic capacitors

Question
My radio stays on but the sound quits And later comes back on with a poping sound then is fine for a short time and does it again. I have tried remoning the Iod fuse it looks fine and doesnt seem to be the problem. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated

Answer
Hi Joe,
I would verify that the antenna lead in wire at radio rear and at the mounting point on the underside of the fender is solid by gently flexing it at those two points with the radio "on". If that seems to be solid then I would suspect an electronic issue in the radio itself, probably one of the electrolytic capacitors which have a propensity to open/close/short on their own as they age. Were that the case you would want to remove the radio and look at the circuit board(s) focussing on the the cylindrical components that are mounted vertically on the surface of the board to see if you can spot one that has some moisture/shine directly under the cylinder showing on the board. If so, replace that one using a soldering pencil to remove and reinstall the seame uf and voltage rating as is shown on the suspected one. That is an 'educated' guess.
