Chrysler Repair: 2002 2.4L code 0132, 0140, 0171, chrysler pt cruiser, o2 sensors

Question
Hi! I have a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser with almost 79,000 miles, it's the 2.4L. It will run almost perfect sometimes and then other times it runs horribly rough, it will hesitate at take off, idle rough, and sometimes the a/c will stop blowing cold when it starts running rough... also, when you are driving and come to a stop at like a stop light it will act as if it is about to go dead and you have to give it some gas to keep it running, and sometimes it will still go dead on you. It is throwing codes P0132, P0140, and P0171... I know they all have something to do with the O2 sensors but other than that have no clue!

My dad is an Auto Body Technician and does some engine work, but he has just been baffled by this car and just doesn't know where to start!

Oh, and also we just noticed today that it is blowing a lot of stuff out the tail pipe as well!

Answer
Hi Amanda,
With all the codes pointing to the upstream oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold, I recommend that you look at its wiring and if that seems to be alright then change out that sensor. The engine will run reasonably when cold, but then when the engine warms up and the sensor is called into play things will degrade as you describe.
