Chrysler Repair: 1995 Chrysler LHS interior lights, 1995 chrysler lhs, side kick panel

Question
Interior lights will stay on, I have checked all door switches, disconnected the headlight switch, checked fuses, is there another timer some where in the dash, I can hear a winding sound for appox. 90 seconds

Answer
Hi Marsh,
There are two separate sources of lighting:one that is powered all the time (M1) and allow for manual control of some of the lights, and one that is controlled by the body computer and automatically turns them on and then via a timer turns them off after 30 seconds. There is also a switch on the headlight switch that turns them on manually. I would check the yellow/red wire on the headlamp switch to see if it might be shorted "on" all the time (e.g. have 12v no matter where the variable dimmer is set. If that is not it, then I would wonder if the timer circuit is not working to shut them off after 30 seconds. That timer is centered in the body computer mounted on the right side kick panel just in front of the door opening at the lower corner and hidden by some trim cloth. You get to it by removing the right end cap of the dash at the door opening. Then remove the trim panel, exposing the carpeting and the dash liner. Cut the dash liner along the perforated lines to get to the computer. There is a screw in an oblong hole at the end of the knee bolster which when removed allow the computer to be removed after unclipping its other fastener, a push-in. There are three plugs on the computer. It is possible that water/dirt has fallen down on the plug/socket interfaces which then causes shorts which produce 'gremlins' like the lights refusing to go off. So I would suggest that you clean the interfaces between the plugs/sockets and spray some circuit board cleaner on them which will evaporate away any residual water. Finally make sure that the black/light green wire on pin 14 of the bone colored plug is showing 0 ohms to ground as if it isn't that failure to have a good ground wire can produce "gremlins".
Finally, did you try pushing in on all the doors, from the outside, to see if less than securely latched door is preventing its switch from being closed?
I hope one of these approaches will work out for you.
