Chrysler Repair: 97 cirrus: No starter motor action, solenoid switch, neutral safety switch

Question
When I start and drive my car and then turn the vehicle off, then get back in and try to start the vehicle again it won't start. It doesn't turn over or make cranking sounds. all the accessories come on...radio, lights etc, but it won't start. Sometimes it would take over an hour for it to start again...
Now it won't even start at all, drove it for 5 minutes, turned it off then got back in to start it, nothing. could this be the ignition coil or starter?

Answer
Hi Donna,
If you don't hear the loud click of the solenoid switch when you try the starter, then it is not the starter motor but rather the circuit that energizes the solenoid on the starter. It could be the ignition switch, or the starter motor relay, or the park/neutral safety switch.
Try the last one: move the gear shift lever slightly to one side or the other of the detent in which it rests when it is either in park or neutral and hold it there while you try the ignition key. If nothing changes then it is not the park/neutral safety swtich being out of adjustment.
So then, open the power distribution box under the hood, it is located between the engine computer and the transmission computer, just behind the radiator on the driver's side. Look carefully at the very rear of the box where there is a downstep to a lower level. At the lower level there are four square boxes which are relays (there are also relays in the front of the box but they are smaller). The relay that is closest to the front on the driver's side of the box is the starter motor relay. See is when a helper tries the starter you can feel or hear a slight click occuring in that front/left relay. If not, then I would suspect either the ignition switch or that fuse #5 in that box is flaky check to see if it has a crack in the wire). If it does click, then either the wire from the relay to the starter solenoid/the relay itself that powers the solenoid switch on the starter is bad (try switching the relay for one of the others in the back of box to test if that is the case), or possibly the starter motor solenoid switch is flaky. You could determing which via a voltmeter if you have one. Let me know.
