Chrysler Repair: Service engine soon light, powertrain control module, plymouth voyager

Question
QUESTION: What would cause this?
On a 96 Plymouth Voyager:
The "Service Engine" light comes on intermittently.  I have had this checked out numerous times and each time
it's a false reading.  The mechanic has told me to ignore it.  The light will come on periodically and stay on for a couple of days, then it disappears for months at a time, and then it will pop up again, then
disappear....and so on.

ANSWER: Hi Sean,
I believe that on the '96 models that you can get any fault codes that are stored in the powertrain control module using the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light that remains 'on' to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure that you have an accurate set of flash counts. Group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance. The last set of counts is 5 in each or the number 55 which is the code for 'end of readout'. Write back with the other codes that come out and we'll go from there. Or go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a code list.
There should be code stored when the light comes on for a while. It will erase if the fault is not seen again after 50-100 key on-off cycles.

QUESTION: Roland, thank you for the prompt reply.
I guess what I'm trying to determine is,  is this a fault with this monitoring system? It just comes on & then eventually turns off [or gets reset] and no problem is detected. Have you heard of this occurring before on other caravans?
Again Roland, thanks..

Answer
Hi Sean,
I have never seen a mention of the light coming on as you describe without there being set a fault code. So if you do the key routine immediately you may catch the code before it resets. If the battery is disconnected briefly the code will be erased (except that disconnect will prompt a 12 code to be set). Maybe you have a loose battery connection?
