Chrysler Repair: 96 Sebring conv.:fuel gauge/gas starvation?, chrysler sebring jxi, chrysler sebring

Question
i have a 1996 Chrysler sebring JXi conv. the problem is when my gas needle reaches half tank the car starts acting like it is running out of gas. and shuts down. long as i keep the needle over half it runs fine. i don't understand what would cause this problem. can you help me.

Answer
Hi Mike,
If you can't get more that about 8 gallons into tank which would show that the gauge is accurate when it shows half, then I don't believe the issue has to do with the gauge, but rather with the fuel pump itself or the evaporative control system. All I can imagine is that the pump may be marginal when that lower level approaches (check the fuel line pressure to see if it is in the range of 50 psi), or that there is an excessive vacuum in the tank so at that point try opening and shutting the gas cap and see if that relieves the problem for awhile.
I just got you question from the 'pool', sorry for the delay.
