Chrysler Repair: Running lights stay on: 92 LeBaron convert, side kick panel, chrysler lebaron

Question
my son has a 1992 chrysler lebaron conv, GTC.   We are
having a problem with the running lights staying on.   This
happened before after the transmission was rebuilt and
keeping the battery disconnected for a day cleared the
issue.   Well the torque converter went bad and now we are
having the same issue after getting back from the shop.
Would like to resolve permanenetly

Answer
Hi Mark,
If you mean by running lights the front and rear running lights, also called the parking lights, then there is a relay in the relay box under the dash, on the driver side kick panel relay box (front of the top row of relays) that energizes those lights. The relay may be stuck 'on' or the switch inside the headlight switch may be shorted to ground, or the wire between the switch and the relay maybe shorted to ground. Grounding that wire is what the switch does when in the first and second detents. So try switching that relay with another one of the same part number, and if that doesn't work then check whether the front pin in the relay's socket is shorted to ground. If it is, then either the wire, the headlamp switch, or the combo flasher unit is shorting it. Let me know and we'll go from there.
