Chrysler Repair: Fault codes: P0442 and 0445, jeep grand cherokee, jeep manuals

Question
Received 2 fault codes for a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Has a 4.7L engine. The codes are P0445 & P0442. Do you know what part may be bad and the location of the part? Any information would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Bob,
Those codes say that there is a leak in the system that captures fuel vapor for later recycling (by and from the charcoal canister) into the engine to burned instead of releaed into the atmosphere. The best way to check through that system is to follow the hose diagram posted on the underside of the hood as it relates to the evaporation collection canister, hoses between it and the fuel tank and the leak detection pump and the intake manifold to try and find a loose clamp or cracked hose. One code is for a moderate leak rate the other for a high leak rate being detected (probably recorded sequentially over time in the recent past as the problem increased). That would be the way to chase this down. It will also involve lifting the front end of the vehicle to find the pump, the canister is usually somewhere near the right front corner of the engine compartment. But because I don't have any Jeep manuals I can't offer specific locations. But you do have the sticker on the underside of the hood for direction.
Best of luck.
