Chrysler Repair: 1995 Lebaron starter wont run, neutral safety switch, clutch pedal

Question
I have a 1995 Lebaron that wont start after I replaced the transmission. I
don't have detailed wiring diagrams to troubleshoot this, but have done what
I can so far. I do know that if I remove the starter relay from the relay and
fuse box and jump across the input and output side, the car will crank and
start. I have a Chilton book for the car that gives some information on the
neutral safety switch. Not where it is, but that the center pin should be
grounded in park, and the two outside pins should have continuity while in
reverse. Based on this, it seems that the neutral safety switch is the one
directly below the shift lever, but I am still not sure. Based on color codes in
the Chilton book I have, it seems like it might not be. I keep thinking that a
connector is disconnected somewhere, but I can't find one. Thoughts?...

Answer
Hi Tom,
The switch on the side of the trans that faces the front of the car is the transmission range switch; the switch to its right (on the diagonal face of the trans, facing the left front tire) is the park/neutral safety switch. When you put the trans in park or neutral the center pin should be grounded. The wire color on the plug for that pin is brown/yellow and on the way to the relay socket it passes through a 10-pin disconnect where the wire color is changed to brown/light blue and goes to outboard pin of the starter relay socket. So test that socket pin to see if it is grounded in park/neutral. The inboard pin of the socket has a yellow wire that comes from the ignition switch (pin 1 of its 7-pin plug). There is a jumper on that wire mounted on the brake pedal support that bridges a gap in the wire that would otherwise be used for a clutch pedal interlock safety switch if you had a manual transmission, so if you don't see 12V at the relay inboard socket when you try the starter check to be sure that jumper is in place.  That is basically the circuit to energize the starter relay and provide 12V on the brown wire to the starter solenoid.
