Chrysler Repair: Codes: 92 New Yorker, exhaust gas recirculation valve, chrysler new yorker

I have 1992 chrysler new yorker and i change out alternator and now check engine light come and on. it will start but won't stay runnging unless u keep foot on gas..other wise quits. Codes r 1,2,4,1,4,6..Can U heple me with this problem on how to fix ? Thanks Mike

Hi Mike,
The codes are 2-digit numbers, so what you have there is:
12 which says the battery was disconncted recently (which is true probably be because you did that to change out the alternator)
41 which means alternator field not switching properly (which may be an old code from before you changed the alternator, or maybe a real code if the alternator still isn't charging correctly)
46 which means the alternator output voltage is too high (which may be an old code from before you changed the alternator, or maybe a real code if the alternator still isn't charging correctly).
I don't see a reason for why the engine won't stay running. On that problem I would wonder if the exhaust gas recirculation valve might be sticking open slightly ajar? You didn't specify which engine you have so I can't tell you where to look for it and how you would check whether that is the problem. So let me know and I will tell you what to do about that.
I would also suggest that you disconnect the battery for about a minute, which will erase all the old codes except the 12.  Then start and drive the car if you can for a while and then read the codes again and let me know what you have now.
