Chrysler Repair: Power steering sticking, sebring convertable, excessive friction

Question
My friend has a 2001 Chrysler Sebring convertable with the 2.7. His power steering is sticking and he changed out the fluid and now insists the pump is going bad. I can find no info for changing it out. Can you help? Also could there be other issues causing this to happen?

Answer
Hi Randy,
If the steering sticks in certain positions or is difficult to turn there are about 11 possibilities:
Low fluid level
Tires not inflated properly
Lack of lubrication in front suspension ball joints
Warn lower ball joint
Lack of lubrication in tie rod outer ends
Loose pump drive belt
Faulty pump flow control
Excess friction in steering column or intermediate shaft
Binding lower ball joint
Worn front strut seal and bearing or strut pin stuck in strut seal
Excessive friction in steering gear.

Most of them suggest replacementof the parts, but of course identifying which it is comes first.
On the 2.7L pump, I have the instructions for removing the pump on that engine as used in the LH body cars, which is probably applicable to the use in the Sebring. Let me know if you want that as I can xerox and postal mail it to you. But consider the possibilities first.
