Chrysler Repair: 95 le baron transmission wont engage, fuse box, trans shop

Question
I just purchased said vehicle and it has a transmission problem. when you first start the car it will go into gear. after about a block or if you have to stop, it goes into neutral and unless rpm's are increased, it will not go into any gear. is this a replacement or a sensor job?

Answer
Hi Kevin,
Have you checked the level of transmission fluid as shown on the dipstick? If you need some, add only ATF +4 type and don't overfill it. Other than that, the best answer to your question is to do a fault code readout via a 6-pin blue socket under the dash near the fuse box. Be sure the readout box can access the transmission fault codes as distinguished from the engine fault codes that come out of a connector in the engine compartment. Once you get the fault codes let me know what the 2-digit fault code numbers are and we can see if it requires a rebuild or not. It might be a fluid pressure issue inside the trans or it could be a clutch failure. Those are much different types/costs of repair so do get a code readout. An independent trans shop would be a good place to start, but not a franchise nationwide type of shop.
