Chrysler Repair: lost keys, chrysler dealer, immobilizer system

Question
Lost BOTH set of keys for 2002 sebring LXI sedan.  Now what do I do? Is it difficult to replace and very expensive?  lease help. We are stranded. Only have the key that unlocks the car.

Answer
Hi Debbie,
The least expensive approach would be to try and get the key "code" for the ignition switch key by calling a Chrysler dealer and ask the parts department if they can look in the corporate data base to find it by using VIN (vehicle identification number, the one you see on the dash when looking thru the windshield) as a reference. Ideally that code should be shown there, and then the dealer can cut a new key for you. Perhaps the code on the door key would be useful to them so look for that on the keys you have, too. I wasn't aware that they made 2 separate keys (which shows I don't own such a new model!)
The other approach is to have a local locksmith "diagnose" what the key should be cut like, so that would be the second approach and have them cut the key that way. I suspect that might cost a bit more and they would have to come to the car or have the car towed there for that approach.
In a pinch, if the car doesn't have a 'smart key immobilizer system' you could remove the shields on the column and remove the ignition section and operate it by hand.
If you have the SKIS however, that may be another problem because then you not only have to have a key with correct 'cut' but also it has to be 'programmed' to get past the immobilizer. That would be the case if the old key had a certain color cap on the end. So mention that if you don't recall if you have that system or not. If you do, then probably the car would have to be at the dealer to get it reprogrammed (although maybe locksmiths can do that too?).
Best of luck on this situation.
Roland

While you are there, please notice the question about a 'nomination to be expert of the month' which if you would be so kind as to choose "yes" I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance.
