Chrysler Repair: car noises, chilly weather, cv joints, plymouth neon

Question
Is it normal for a car to make more noises when the temperature outside changes significantly? We're in Southern California where the daytime temp range has been 70-85 F. Yesterday it dropped down to about 50-55. The car is making several different types of new noises, none of them very loud, but enough to make a difference. It's a '99 Plymouth Neon. Otherwise the car seems to run OK.

Answer
Hi David,
I think that there is likely to be some temperature dependent noises that might come from the engine drive belt(s)/pulleys, the water pump bearing, the alternator bearing, the power steering pump, the cv-joints, wheel bearings, essentially anything that moves and has grease, oil, or some other lubricant whose viscosity is going to change with temperature. So unless you hear something alarming and can localize it to a specific item, I would not be concerned about minor changes. But if you spot a specific sound source by using a short length of rubber hose as an "ear horn", let me know where it seems to be from.
