Chrysler Repair: 83 New Yorker heating fan not working and windows wont work, chrysler new yorker, fuse block

Question
I have a 2.6 83 Chrysler New Yorker. This morning I turned on my car to find that the heat seems to be coming out but the fan is not working to push the air through the car, I also realized that none of my windows will work any more. Is is a coincidence that both these happened at the same time or is it a problem that may link them both?

Answer
Hi Larissa,
I was wondering how things worked out with the fan and the windows? Please let me know by using the 'thank/rate' tab below. While you are there if I might ask a favor: where it asks about a 'nomination for expert of the month' I would appreciate your entering a 'yes'. I am in a close race for that honor so every vote counts!
Thanks,
Roland

Hi Larissa,
The blower is powered by fuse #4 (30 amp), while the windows are powered by a resettable circuit breaker in the adjacent #3 position of the fuse box under the dash. So check those out.  Unless they are both not working, and instead both seem to be fine yet there is no voltage to either one, then I would believe that a gray colored fusible link (a wire that acts like a fuse) is blown. You will see about 7 such colored wires that look like fat spaghetti bundled together near the battery on the driver side of the engine compartment near the inner fender. Find the gray colored one and pull on both ends of it to see if it separates (meaning that it is blown). If it does then you will need to get a replacement fusible link of the same color and splice it into the ends of the wires to which it is connected (use eleectrical solder and a solder pencil to secure the splices). That is how I see it in the '83 manual for the New Yorker.

PS Use the 'thank/rate' tab below to get back to me with any further questions, without having to wait for me to be available to take a question. There is a space for comments to which I will reply.

PPS A third possibility is that the section of the igntion switch thru which the current from the gray link flow to the fuse block positions 3 and 4 is not conducting due to oxidized contacts. You could try spraying some contact cleaner inside the switch to see if you can restore the function. This would be the case if you find the gray link to be ok but you aren't getting power to the fuses when you have switch in the 'run' position.
