Chrysler Repair: Engine knocking, connecting rod bearing, low oil pressure

Question
My chrysler 300 is makeing a knocking noise coming from the engine. Got an oil change and its still doing it. What could be the problem and about how much money am I looking at?

Answer
Hi Rich,
It is typically, if the sound is deep in tone and coming from the block area, either a main bearing or connecting rod bearing that is making the sound. Does it change with rpm? Have you tried a higher viscosity number oil? Is it louder after the engine warms up. How many miles on which engine? Those are some of the possibilites and questions that I have. If it is a clicking sound from the top of the engine then that is more likely a valve adjuster, oil-related to low oil pressure. It is very uncertain until you know the source of the sound with greater certainty, and perhaps try a higher 'weight' oil to see if that reduces or eliminattes the sound, to estimate repair costs. You might also want to check the compression of the cylinders as futher evaluation of the condition of the rings and valves so as to get it all done in one repair if you are going to do it. You can get some direction too at an engine rebuilding shop if one of their mechanics would be willing to listen.
