Chrysler Repair: 96 2.5L V-6 stalls while running fine, crankshaft sensor, golf handicap

Question
Let me start that my auto handicap is higher then my golf handicap.  I will try to keep this brief.  We have replaced the distributor about seven times the chrysler dealer said they don't last because they are not Chrysler distributors.  The last one didn't last one day.  I am very frustrated because I gave the car to a friend while I was out of the country.  This problem has been going on for 2 years.  The car runs perfect then just stalls while driving.  We are at wits end.  It is a 1996 Sebring jxi convertible.  Please let me know you help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Tony

Answer
Hi Tony,
I wonder how things worked out with getting the stalling problem fixed? You can report back if you like by the 'thank/rate' tab below, without having to wait for me to be 'available' to take a question. While you are there, if my answer was helpful I would appreciate a vote of 'yes' for the 'nomination to be expert of the month'. I am in a close race for that honor so every vote is helful. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tony,
Use the ignition key/switch to get the fault codes that are likely stored in the engine computer:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains 'on', to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to verify an accurate count set. The last two sets will be 5 flashes each. Then group the counts into pairs in the order of appearance, thus forming the 2-digit fault code numbers. The last number will of course be 55, which is the code for end of readout. If the preceeding code is 11 that means the crankshaft sensor is breaking down, and that fortunately is much less expensive then the sensor in the distributor. The one in the distributor is breaking down again if you get a code 54. Write back with any other codes and we can go from there about what to do. Use the "thank/rate" tab below to get back to me without having to wait for me the be 'available' to take a question. There is a space for comments, to which I will respond.

PS Sorry for the delay. I just found your question in the 'pool' to which it had been referred.
