Chrysler Repair: town & country van: rear wheel brake grinding sound, rear drum brakes, postal mail

Question
We have a 97 town & country van. the rear drum brakes grind terribly. Sounds like the drums are rusted, or the pads are worn past the rivets. We have had them serviced twice. There is no apparent visable problems according to the service techs. according to Alldata there is are TSB's (05-01-97 & 05-02-97) for adding special chrysler grease to the wheel cylinder that fixes the problem. Huh? the TSB implies that the brake cylinder pistons are sticking, or the cylinder is loose on the backing plate Any ideas? ca

Answer
Hi Clay,
As I review the rear brake set up, there are quite a few details about assembling it properly which may not have been observed somewhere in the past. I can xerox copy and postal mail you those pages if you would like. I doubt it has anything to do with grease, but there are places noted where grease has to be applied for the shoes to be free to move in and out. Have you removed the wheel to look for places where the wheel inside surface of the drum may be rubbing on the edge of the brake shoes? That is the only way to get to the bottom of this as far as I can see.

Hi Clay,
Thanks for the response and nomination. One question as I have both the '95 and the '98 manuals, but not the '97, and they differ. When you go to service the shoes, do you remove only the drum (leaving the hub in place (98) or does the hub and drum come off as a unit (95). Knowing which allows me to send the correct pages.
