Chrysler Repair: 2000 Cirrus:hazard flasher circuit shorted, london ontario canada, postal mail

Question
QUESTION: I asked a question previously about the flasher unit that makes the turning signals work.  Heres my problem my turning signals were not working replaced the flasher the signals worked until i got an oil change and the attendant pushed in the hazard light switch on top of steering column.  This blew the fuse under the hood as well as shorted the new flasher unit. Now I need to find where the short is just need some direction.

Thanks Eric

ANSWER: Hi Eric,
There are two or three fuses that might have blown: #6 under the hood, #15 under the dash, and possibly #8 under the hood. Can you tell me which of those blew? And have you replaced the combination flasher or the multifunction switch? Which fuse(s) still blow and when do the blow (as soon as inserted, or when you try the turn signals, or when you try the hazards)? My suspicion is that hazard flasher switch is shorted as the when you press on the hazard switch you connect one of the wires from the combo flasher to ground, and perhaps another hot contact in the switch is also being grounded. I can xerox the pages from the manual that show how to test the switch, and also a page that shows the circuit, and postal mail those to you. Use the "thank/rate" tab below to tell me your postal mailing address and anything else you can about my questions. Use the comment area. You will not have to wait for me to be 'available' to take a question that way.

yes i replaced the flasher unit and fuse #6. When i place it in the socket and try the hazard lights it blows the fuse as well as the flasher itself shorts out when i do this. My Adress is, 242 wildgoose rd London, Ontario Canada n5w 6e2 Thanks

Hi Eric,
If the turn signals work properly, then the short is inside the multifunction switch's hazard activation section. I believe you will find that when you measure between pin 4 and pin 5 of the 7-wire plug socket of the switch (with the plug removed from the switch) that you will find they are being connected together when you push the hazard button, which is causing the short to ground. The only solution is to remove the multi-function switch and see if you can examine the part of the switch that moves when you press down the hazard button. I believe you will find there is a bent or broken contact inside of it. If you can't get into it, then a replacement will be required. I don't see any other possibility so there is no point in copying and mailing the diagrams to you.

QUESTION: the turn signals don't work at all. When the flasher is placed in the circuit it blows fuse #6. where is pin 4 and 5 on this switch

Answer
Hi Eric,
Did you solve the hazard flasher problem?
Earlier, last month, you asked me a question about that problem with your vehicle. Now I need to ask a favor of you. I am competing for the honor of being the "Expert of the Month" for December. You can help me by going the the 'thank/rate' tab below and look for the question that asks if you think I should be so-honored. If you would select the 'yes' option I would be most appreciative. Please do this before 6pm CST today, New Year's Eve when the competition ends. I wish that your Chrysler vehicle is running well and gives you good service in the New Year!

Hi Eric,
The 7-pin black plug of the switch has 3 pins on one side (1-3) and 4 on the other (4-7). There is a non-pin key of some sort on the 1-3 side and the true pin directly below that is #4. The opposite side, on the plug, has a pink wire on that pin. The adjacent pin has a black/tan wire and that is #5. Now either there is a short between 4 and 5 inside the switch, measure with both the plug and the flasher pulled out to see if that is the case. If not, then the flasher itself, which has two of its pins connected to 4 and 5 when it is plugged in is shorted out internally. You said that the flasher AND the fuse were blown. So it could very well be the case that the flasher is blown again if you replaced it and the fuse blew again. Either that or 4 and 5 are shorted inside the multifunction switch regardless of whether the hazard is pushed in. Those are the only reasons I can see for the fuse to blow just because you plugged in the flasher with neither the hazard button pushed nor the turn signal activated. It has to be one or the other (bad switch/bad flasher). Test with the flasher removed (with and without the hazard pushed) and if that doesn't show a 4-5 short, put in the flasher and test it again. If it now shows short then your flasher is blown again.

PPS The voting for 'expert of the month' ends tomorrow afternoon. If you would be so kind as to find the "nomination?" area of the 'thank/rate' tab and change the 'no' to a 'yes' that would give a vote. Thanks
