Chrysler Repair: Rear brakes binding up, wheel lugs, bolt holes

Question
We were recently given a 1999 Buick Century Custom. It had been sitting for 2 yrs. We were able to drive it home but when I tried workin on it the rear brakes had locked up. I am not able to turn the drums at all and Im not able to take the drums off. Any suggestions os what I can try next?

Answer
Hi Jose,
I would try backing off the brake shoe adjusters, and then put the wheels back on and put the car back on the ground. Then try to rock the car back and forth by hand or using the engine/trans to rock it back and forth which should break loose the bind-up of the drum to the shoes. Then once the drums are free to rotate I would squirt some pentrtating oil or WD-40 at the interface of the brake drum with the spindle (the inner circle) and/or the wheel lugs/bolt holes that protrude thru the drum, and let it sit overnight to dissolve the rust that is probably binding the drum to the spindle plate. You may need to try heating the drum with a torch and tapping on it as another way to break up the rusted together situation.
Those are some of the techniques to try. Good luck.
