Chrysler Repair: 1996 lhs 3.5l, crank pulley, crank shaft

Question
Hello Roland,
My LHS overheated the other day. I re-filled the overflow tank and noticed water coming out directly under the crank pulley. I had the water pump replaced a year or so ago and all seemed fine. Does this sound like new water pump needed? Is the job difficult to perform for a non-mechanic but reasonably decent do it yourselfer? Special tools required?
Much thanks!

Answer
Hi Ted,
Yes, the water pump is directely above the crank shaft and its pulley so that is a reasonable theory. However, do you have a basis for believing that there might not be another issue related to a leak somewhere else in the engine, such as a head gasket? For example do you see steam coming out the tailpipe when you start the engine from cold? or from anyother surface of the block? If not, then proceeding on the pump as the primary cause seems reasonable. Let me know if otherwise.
To service that you need to know remove the crank pulley and the timing belt covers, and the timing belt and the tensioner. Then replace the pump and work backwards. It is something you would definitely want the manual for and to have a reasonable assortment of tools, rent a crank pulley, and have a torque wrench. I can xerox copy and mail you pages from the manual. It costs me 10 cents per side plus the postage, but you can reimburse me with stamps after you get the pages.
