Chrysler Repair: 87 N. Y.er, trying to figure out how to get the steering wheel off bcuz our highbeams are stuck on, high beams, lowbeams

Question
We yanked on the highbeams lever and now they are stuck on, including the lowbeams. We have been undoing the battery everytime we get in and out. Got a steering wheel puller today, but cant get anything off after the basic steering wheel. My husbands too cheap to buy a chilton. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Answer
Hi CJ,
I wonder if you might not be able to solve this one by removing the covers of the steering columm (screws on the underside hold the upper and lower halves of the column covers) and then inspect the dimmer switch which is connected to the dimmer lever by a rod. If the rod mechanism is OK, then the switch itself may be the issue. The high beams are on all the time because you have jambed the "optical horn" position of the switch. So it may be the switch is damaged or the you can reset the interconnection of the switch to the rod. Let me know if that doesn't work and I can describe the procedure for removing the steering wheel so you can deal with the dimmer lever. Tell me if you have the standard or the til-type steering column if that is necessary.
