Chrysler Repair: 2003 Chrysler Sebring GTC Convertible Oil Light Flickers at Idle, light flickers, light flicker

Question
Hello,  I have seen this question posted several times concerning what makes the oil light flicker at idle when the 2.7L engine is hot.  I need to know what the idle speed should be in order to determine if that is the problem with my car.  It currently idles between 600 to 700 RPM when the engine is hot.  It is at this point that the oil light flickers.  I use Castrol 10W-30 oil, and the local dealership who just replaced my "defective" oil sending unit says to drop down to 5W-30 oil and add a BG additive.  I really do not want to change oil viscosity, especially to a lower one.  And, I do not want to use additives especially since the car is still under Power Train Warranty (59,500 miles).  I hope you can tell me what the idle speed should be, and how to get the idle speed up if that is the issue.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer
Hi BigDawg,
The manual doesn't specify the idle speed rpm. The minimum PSI at idle is specified to be 5. I note the manual recommends against additives of any kind so I agree with you on that.
My suggestion would be to measure what the pressure is at idle and compare to the spec. if you want to be certain you have sufficient pressure. Remove the sender and substitute a calibrated gauge for the reading. The computer is programmed for a specified idle speed and it adjusts the idle air control motor to achieve it so there is no simple way to change the idle.
Then I would consider raising the oil weight to 15W-40 if the light annoys you, that will probably raise the pressure sufficiently to keep it off. You might also want to use synthetic oil to minimize the build-up of crud/deposits which the engine has been known to have a problem with.
Sorry for the delay, your question just appeared in the "pool" this morning.
