Chrysler Repair: 1996 T&C starter motor problem, solenoid switch, starter solenoid

Question
Hello, I have a 1996 3.8 chrysler t&c with an intermittent starter problem. When starting, it will click several times and then start. The warmer the engine the longer the delay. I have changed the starter, the problem is better but still there. I am wondering if I have a bad starter. Thanks for your help, dave

Answer
Hi David,
It depends upon whether the click is loud or soft (starter motor solenoid switch or starter relay in the power distribution box). If it is the loud one and you changed the starter motor (and usually along with that its solenoid switch), then I would have believe the problem is with either the red wire from the +post clamp to the starter motor not being well connected at either end or perhaps corroded near the battery clamp OR the black ground wire from the -clamp of the battery to the rear of the engine is not connected cleanly and tightly at one end or the other.
If the sound is just the soft click of the starter motor relay in the box, then I would suspect that relay's internal points are oxidized and so it needs to be replaced. An outside possibility is the brown wire from the relay socket to the starter solenoid is faulty, so check that too.
Those are the best suggestions I would have. On the assumption that the starter motor is OK, it either has to be those connections, or possibly your battery is loosing its starting current output capability due to oxidation of the internal plates. How old is it?
