Chrysler Repair: Fuel filter of Dodge Neon, chrysler neon, fuel hoses

Question
Chrysler Repair: Fuel filter of Dodge Neon, chrysler neon, fuel hoses
3-hoses fuel filter fo
I have Chrysler Neon 1997, 2.0l SOHC.
I have problems with power losing and engine stumbling.
In addition I hear fuel pump excessive sound,
as if it is trying to push the fuel through obstacles.
It seems relate to fuel filter clogged.

The issue is that my old (mounted now) fuel filter has 2 hoses.
But this one
http://www.car-stuff.com/store/?N=9293+10025+4294965607+1607+11921
has three ones (third hose seems for sending fuel back).

I looked to the manual. it tells me that there should be no outside filter
for my car, all filtering is doing by filter/pressure regulator
on the output of the fuel pump, which at the same time sends
fuel back in case of excessive pressure.
Whereas in the wiring diagrams there is a picture showing 3-hoses filter mounted
(see image attached)

Question 1. Could I throw out my outside filter,
because inside one does its work already?

Question 2. If I decide to mount 3-hoses outside filter,
could I close the 3rd back hose with some stub? Is there any stub
for fuel hoses?

Question 3. could I use for outside filtering
some universal fuel filter, for example,
K&N this one -> http://www.car-stuff.com/carparts/universalk-and-nk33810261.html ?

Thanks in advance,

Answer
Hi Anar,
The '97 Chrysler shop manual for the Neon only show a filter/pressure regulator combination. I would be inclined to stay with the factory design.
Have you tried to get fault codes that might be stored in the controller memory? Turn the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light that remains 'on' to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to assure an accurate flash count. Then write back with the counts in order of appearance and we'll go from there.
You can get back to me by using the "thank/rate" tab below without having to wait for me to be 'available' to take a queston. There is a space for comments.
