Chrysler Repair: Concealed Headlights wont work:92 Lebaron, chrysler lebaron convertible, chrysler lebaron

Question
QUESTION: Hi I have a 1992 Chrysler Lebaron Convertible with a 2.5 liter turbo engine. I bought the car several months ago and the hidden headlights were not working. My father and I bought a used front bumper at a junkyard. We used some of the parts from the new bumper to put on my car. One of the parts being a new motor fro the hidden headlights. We tested it before putting it in and still does not work. We checked all the fuses and cannot figure out why they still don't work?! Please help!!

ANSWER: Hi Sarah,
I assume that you have checked all the fuses, or that at least the stop lamps, the power top, the headlamps, are working. If those items work, then I suspect that the concealed headlamp relay (main) is not working, or that it isn't getting the signal from the body computer to activate one of the other two relays (door open/door close). If you look under the dash, on the panel to the left of the driver's leg you will find a relay block. The first three relays in the second row are for the headlamp doors. The front one is the main relay. Check that you have 12V on the top pin of the socket (#37 if labelled). Then try to turn on the headlamps which should cause that relay to click (listen/feel) and simultaneously the second and third relays should also click. if nothing clicks, then try switching the second or third relay for the first relay, if they have the same part number and see if the substitute relay clicks. If it does then the original front relay is bad. If it doesn't then I would suspect the body control module or the wiring from it to the front relay, but there are some more voltages to check first before concluding for sure about that. But give the above a try, and let me know.

QUESTION: Well my father and I changed all of the realys and the hidden headlights still aren't working. We then disconnected the battery and waited before reconnecting it. Before we did this we closed the healights. When we reconnected the battery the headlights immediately opened. My dad thinks that there is a switch to keep them open all the time which would prevent them from freezing shut in the winter. Is there such a thing on my car? Where is it? If not what else could it be?

Answer
Hi Sarah,
No there is no such cut out switch. I suspect that the relays/motor position were out of synch when you repaired whatever was wrong with them. If they are opening and closing ok then I would conclude that the system has been repaired. You might want to put a bit of oil on the pivots at the outer end of each door to minimize friction and improve movement in the winter. Best of luck.
