Chrysler Repair: Timing belt on 97 3.5L engine:non-interference, timing chain, timing belt

Question
If the timing belt on my 1997 concorde breaks while driving, will it cause extensive damage to the engine?

Answer
Hi Tony
The 3.3L has a timing chain so is very unlikely to break, while the 3.5L has a timing belt but the pistons are designed with recesses such that the valves cannot come in contact even at their highest lift point. So it appears to me you have no issue to worry about with your '97. However. the 3.2 and 3.5L engines of '98/'99-on are interference prone so they would be damaged if the belt broke while in motion.
