Chrysler Repair: 98 Dodge Intrepid: New Computer?, chrysler cars, dodge intrepid

Question
Hi Kevin. I own a 98 Dodge Intrepid ES and about a week ago when I started it, it shut off after a few seconds, but then after that started fine. A day or two later the same thing happened except this time it would start and then completely lose power. The check engine light also was coming on and off along with the oil light. I took it to Firestone who said it was a bad battery even though I had just put in a new battery a few weeks before. After they replaced the battery the car was still shutting off and they ended up giving it back to me because they could not figure out what was wrong. I took it to an Auto electrical shop where they ran a test and were still not sure so they said they had to do another diagnostic and later said that the computer's circuit board in the car is enclosed in a gel and they could see that something was burnt in there. They said I needed to replace the computer and would have to order it from the dealer and also pay the dealer to program it. He also said the computer in the car is not the original computer that came with the car, but a re manufactured one. I bought this car from a friend 2 yrs ago for $2000 and was wondering if you think it will be worth fixing it. It seems like since this is not the original computer that this problem had occurred before. Could there be something else causing the computer to burn out? Also, is there anywhere I can get a computer cheaper than from the dealer that is already programmed? About how much does the computer cost?

Answer
first of all  9 times out of 10 its not a computer. so I would let a REAL shop take a look at it one that is special in Chrysler cars  or a dealer for that matter. If u want me to help out I need alot more info because I cant see it first hand and see what is going on.  Need info like any codes in the computer, fuel pressure  and so on.
