Chrysler Repair: 91 LeBaron: odometer, chrysler lebaron convertible, chrysler lebaron

Question
I have a 1991 Chrysler LeBaron convertible, approx 165,000 miles.  The speedometer works fine, but the odometer stopped working.  I read online that the VSS connector corrodes. I checked that, the connector is clean and makes good contact.  The local dealership tells me that the speedometer head is no longer available, any suggestions?  Thanks in advance. Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
I believe that if the odometer is mechanical rather than electronic, what your problem is the odometer gear(s) itself. These seem to be subject to failure such that people have gone into business selling replacement gears. The 20-tooth gear is probably the one that has failed. One on line source is odometergears.com I just bought one from a local speedometer repair shop for less ($20) and didn't have to pay shipping. I haven't tried installing yet but will do so shortly as my odometer on the '89 Lebaron coupe also has stopped. If the speedo works it can't have anything to do with the distance sensor. It has to be in "head" itself.
