Chrysler Repair: 94 Intrepid 3.5 transmission leak, chrysler transmissions, transmission additives

Question
The transmission fluid is leaking from the bell housing cover, is there a gasket for that? Was just a small drip before, but getting big now. Thanks a lot.

Answer
Hi Jody,
Yes there are at least two possibilities: the seal on the input shaft to the transmission and also the torque converter which is located between the engine and the transmission housing. The best thing to do is go to an independent local transmission shop with a good reputation and that is familiar with the Chrysler transmissions who would open the access covers and assess the source of the leak and determine whether it can be repaired without removing the transmission. Not all leaks require removal. Because of the age of the trans and its sensitivity to the type of fluid used I would not try anything involving transmission additives to slow the leak. So go to a reliable shop and have them check this out and give you a repair cost estimate. If you get specifice and want to check what you are told against the shop manual on this subject give me a follow-up question. If the transmission has never been serviced and has over 100,000 miles you may want to consider the removal and some preventive seal maintenance, etc. as it is likely to begin to have other problems in the near future. But be sure it is a reliable shop.
