Chrysler Repair: 91 Lebaron 3.0L V-6: Stalling when stopped, air intake hose, chrysler lebaron

Question
Hi I have a 1991 Chrysler Lebaron V6 with about 72K miles on it. The car runs fine while driving but will stall on me when I am at a stop or stopping. I can prevent the stall if I give it some gas but if I let up on the gas it will stall. This does not happen all the time but is happening more frequently. When it stalls the Check Gauges light comes on, but everything seems OK. The Speedometer and Odometer work but sometimes when I first start the car they do not. I am really not sure if the Odometer is working though since it does seem to stick at times.

Answer
Hi Richard,
The best way to get a clue is to try a readout for fault codes stored in the engine controller memory. Turn the ignition switch:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the "check engine" light, that remains on, to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure you have an accurate count. Let me know the count results in the order that they appeared and we can go from there.
Use the "thank/rate" tab below for immediate access to me rather than waiting for me to be available to take another question. There is a comments section where you can tell me the count results.
Also, tell me if by chance the car was first sold in California as that engine has an extra component (egr valve) that could be involved in your problem.

I did that and it Blinked 5 times then 5 times again thats all. It is a V6 EFI 91 Lebaron bought in Rhode Island and only driven on the East Coast.

Hi Richard,
The 55 is just a code for "end of readout" which basically means there are no fault codes in the memory. The main possibilities for a poor idle/die then is that the spark plugs may be worn out, or that the throttle body throat and "butterfly" plate needs to cleaned as well as the idle air by-pass passageway on the side of the throat. So I would remove the air intake hose at the throttle body and do that cleaning, be sure to get both sides of the plate and the by-pass, using solvent and q-tips.
How many miles on your spark plugs would be another thing to consider.
There are other possibilities that involve testing but try these first.
