Chrysler Repair: 97 LHS Transmission slipping, torque converter, independent shop

Question
My son just bought a 97 LHS. We changed the trans filter and fluid.  Now once in awhile at slow speeds the car  rpms increases but the car does not move. He lets off the gas reshifts and then things are OK.  Should I change the fluid other than dex 111 or put in an additive?  Any help would be nice.

Answer
Hi Jeff,
On the fluid, just be sure there is no Dexron in it; use only ATF +4.
If you already changed the fluid (simply by draining) than that removes about 1/2 the old fluid. To get it all you have to do a power flush to get the fluid that is in the cooler and the torque converter. But before doing that I would try for some diagnositic information.
There are several reasons for slippage, and the most efficient way to find out which is to do a fault code readout for transmission fault codes. Many Autozone stores will do it for free, or an independent shop for $40. Let me know what codes come out and we can go from there. If further diagnosis is needed I would use a local independent (non-franchise) shop that is familiar with the Chrysler trans to do that testing. It is expensive to rebuild so get a good idea of what is wrong before doing any repairs.
