Chrysler Repair: 2000 Cirrus: transmission code 0731, chrysler dealer, pressure measurement

Question
Hi i have a 2000 cirus that wont shift out off first gear. Put scanner on it i get code po731 fist gear malfunction. I knew that could you tell me if this is a easy fix thanks a ton

Answer
Hi Ralph,
The 731 means that there is a discrpency between the speed of the output turbine of the trans and the speed of the wheels in 1st gear, which is also what you have noted.
There is a wide range of possible explanations ranging from too low a level of fluid in the trans all the way to internal damage to the first gear clutch that would require disassembly. In between are a range of possible fixes that involve just the solenoid box on the front side of the transmission or the fluid pump, etc. that would not require remove and rebuild of the trans. My suggestion would be to first check that the fluid is OK and if it low then get some ATF +4 from a Chrysler dealer to bring it just up to full, using a funnel and adding it to the dipstick tube. But don't overfill, and don't use anything other than the Chyrsler recommended/approved fluid.
If that doesn't help, then I would look for an independent (non-nationwide franchise) transmission shop which has knowledge and a good reputation with the BBB or consumer survey magazine for your area and take it there for a thorough diagnosis of all the possibilities. That includes pressure measurement and volume indices, and switch lever position test, and 1st gear clutch test, softwear upgrade possibilities, output speed sensor test/evaluation, anyone of which could explain the 731. Be sure that all possibilities are exhausted so as not to opt for an unnecessary rebuild which is costly. Too many shops will try to sell you on that course of action without first eliminating the other possibilities for a fix.
